Savannah High School FCCLA Hosts “BRAVO for the Cure”
On Thursday August 8th the Savannah FCCLA and the Duncan Hills Thursday Women’s League hosted Rally for the Cure ( a golf tournament)t at the Duncan Hills Golf Course. A sea of pink lined the club house and clasbey center. The tournament was a 3 woman scramble. As the women checked in they were given a medium size pink cooler bag along with pink tees and information on breast cancer. The women were also given a chance to purchase a bonus package to participate in the 11 flag prizes on the course . While a continental breakfast was served, participants were given the time to participate in a putting contest to win the grand prize -- A Navy and Hot Pink Golf Bag. There was a 5 way tie and Tammy Steinkamp’s name was drawn to win the bag. The tournament was a great way for women to learn more about breast cancer. By participating in a Rally Event the women have a direct impact on the health of the people in their community. “The participants and employees of the golf course did an amazing job and helped make the event a huge success.” stated Hannah Bretz FCCLA President.
The rally’s purpose is to educate and inform women about breast cancer awareness. By participating in a Rally event, you are joining a network of over 2.5 million people who have made a commitment to support the fight against breast cancer. This Rally was the 20th anniversary for raising awareness.
The tournament encouraged the competitive spirit by hosting competitions to win prizes, this ensured that the tournament will be fun and entertaining throughout the entire day. These competitions included longest drive in the fairway, longest putt on the green, closest chip to the hole, and closest ball to the hole in three shots just to name a few.
“Without the support of our local businesses and their generosity, we would not have had such a successful turnout” stated Sydney Sharp FCCLA Secretary. Surrounding businesses and golf courses were very generous when donating items and rounds of golf balls for the flag prizes.. The tournament raised $600..00 from the entry fee from the 10 teams that participated. The bonus package collected $150.00 Hannah Bretz and Sydney Sharp, Juniors at Savannah High School, were in charge of the successful tournaments and they use this for their FCCLA community service project. Hannah and Sydney were helped by FCCLA members, officers, and their advisor Tonya Young. They are hosting another golf tournament in Mound City next week.
